Courtney Seyl (they/she) is a playwright, director, and AEA stage manager based in New York City and Seattle. They graduated from the University of Puget Sound in 2017 with their B.A. in Theatre Arts and English after directing The Pillowman by Martin Mcdonagh for their senior thesis. In the summer of 2018, they completed a 6 week training program with the Intiman Emerging Artists Program, where they focused on directing, writing, and producing original solo work.
In 2021 they were accepted into the Kennedy Center Playwriting Intensive where they spent the week collaborating with peers and learning from profressionals in the industry. Led by Gary Garrison and Gregg Henry with classes from Caridad Svich, TJ Miller, Jacqueline Lawton, Chisa Hutchinson, and more.
Over the past few years they've taken classes with Primary Stages and the Playground Experiment, participated in the Voices of America workshop, and their plays are consistently finalists in submissions.
In February of 2020 they premiered Act 2 of their first full length play, REVOLUTION, with FEAST Performance series. In October of 2022 it premiered at The Tank Theatre and was been nominated for seven Off-Broadway Awards. It won Best Performance in an Off-Off Broadway play.
Their play Compulsion has been produced in the Shelter 'n' Play Podcast, has been filmed for the Irondale On Women Festival, and premiered at NYWinterfest in Dec. of 2022.
In September of 2026 they will start their Master's of Literature program with the University of Glasgow where they will be studying playwriting and dramaturgy.
As a director they have been fortunate to direct their shows REVOLUTION and Compulsion. They have also directed Something Unknown for the Strawberry One-Act Festival; assistant directed Aftershocks in NY Winterfest, directed No Exit and Laughing Wild with their company, Red Leather Theatre co; directed The Pillowman and This is Our Youth at the University of Puget Sound; Mirrors by Kailitn Gould at Teatro Latea; and the off-Broadway premiere of Little Egg, Big World by Rachel Leighson at Theatre Row.
